Copper Scrap Slips in India, but the Red Metal Endures

By Alchemist G. G. Wilkins · October 21, 2026 · copper ~$6.25/lb that day

Gather round, scrappers and stillmen, for the red metal has caught a mild chill. BigMint reports that copper scrap prices in India are falling as weaker global sentiment weighs upon the market, and here at home the copper market is down 0.4% on the day. A small stumble, friends, not a funeral. #1 Bare Bright copper scrap stands at about $6.25 per pound as a national average, and I have seen men weep over far lesser sums.

Sentiment, you understand, is a fickle mistress. When traders across the oceans grow nervous about factories, building and the general appetite of nations, copper feels it first. It has long been called the metal with a doctorate in economics, for it sniffs out trouble before the newspapers do. India's scrap yards, hungry importers and melters all feel the wobble, and what is whispered in Mumbai is soon murmured in Memphis.

Yet I have handled copper in good times and lean. In my counterstamping days I drove DR. G. G. WILKINS into more than a hundred thousand copper cents, and those coins passed through every saloon and eating-house in New England, including my own Fort Wilkins, with its caged bear and tooth-pulling chair. Prices rose and fell, panics came and went, and the cents kept circulating. Copper is the people's metal, and the people do not stop needing it.

Consider the still, my favorite theme. In the copper pot still, the alembic of the monks and the worm of the Appalachian moonshiner, the hot vapor meets the red metal, and copper pulls sulfur compounds and other nasty volatiles from the spirit. That is why whiskey, brandy and rum come out clean and sweet. A stainless still cannot do it. No dip in sentiment alters that chemistry, and no distiller worth his salt will trade his copper for lesser stuff. When I raise a glass of good rum, I am toasting the metal that made it fit to drink.

Look also at the wider world. Copper runs in the wire of every house, the water lines under every street, the windings of every electric motor, and the bottoms of fine cookware. It roofs cathedrals and weathers to a noble green. Now it feeds the data centers of this modern age and the electric carriages that hum along our roads. Such demand does not vanish because the markets have a case of the nerves.

So what shall the scrapper do? Sort honestly. Strip your insulated wire, keep your #1 and #2 apart, and do not let brass wander into the bright. Clean material earns its premium in any weather. A dip of 0.4% is a day for patience, not panic, and a day to keep the good stuff in the shed if your purse allows.

Copper has outlasted empires, and it will outlast this week's gloom.

Yours in red and gleaming faith,
— Alchemist G. G. Wilkins
