China Reads the Copper Ledger; Bare Bright Holds Near $5.93

By Alchemist G. G. Wilkins · July 28, 2026 · copper ~$5.93/lb that day

The wires hum this morning from across the Pacific, where the merchants of China tally their copper, aluminum, and stainless steel as a bookkeeper tallies souls. IndexBox lays the numbers before us like cards on a green felt table, and I, who once drove my name into a hundred thousand copper cents, cannot help but lean in close to read them.

Here at home the honest scrapper's #1 Bare Bright fetches near $5.93 the pound, though the market has slipped a modest 1.1% on the day. A trifling stumble, friends — do not let it trouble your sleep. The red metal has weathered emperors and republics, panics and booms, and it shall weather a Tuesday's dip with the same green patina it wears upon a cathedral roof.

Note well what China's ledger truly measures: appetite. Aluminum and stainless steel jostle for their place, but copper sits at the head of the table, for copper alone does the work no upstart alloy can match. It is copper that carries the lightning through the wire, copper that veins the walls of these new data-halls where the machines think their electric thoughts, copper that spins the motors of the silent carriages now rolling upon the roads.

And copper — let me raise my glass to it — is the metal that makes good liquor possible. Set your stainless pot upon the fire and you shall get spirit, aye, but a spirit that reeks of sulfur and sin. The copper alembic, the pot still, the coiled worm of the Appalachian moonshiner — these pull the foul volatiles from the rising vapor and hand you back something clean enough to please a saint. The monks knew it in their stone cloisters; the mountain man knew it in his hollow; and every master distiller from Kentucky to Cognac knows it still. There is chemistry in that gleaming kettle, and I, an alchemist, salute the man who understands it.

So when the Chinese report tells us the world is weighing its metals anew, hear it for what it is — a reminder that every nation, every trade, every thirsty distiller comes back to the same red conductor in the end. A 1.1% dip is the market clearing its throat, nothing more. The wire must be drawn, the water must be piped, the whiskey must be run through copper if it is to be worth the drinking.

Sell your Bare Bright bright, keep your radiators and your brass sorted honest, and remember that you traffic not in mere scrap but in the people's metal itself — the same that once passed hand to hand through my Fort Wilkins, past the caged bear and the tooth-pulling chair. Copper endures. It always has.

Yours in the red metal and the clean spirit it makes possible,
— Alchemist G. G. Wilkins
