Bare Bright at $6.55: Copper Runs Hot as the Vaults Run Dry

By Alchemist G. G. Wilkins · September 3, 2026 · copper ~$6.55/lb that day

Well, well — the ledgers of London are lightening, and the red metal climbs toward its old record like a bear scenting honey. The Investing News Network tells us copper prices sit near record levels as the LME warehouses empty out on tariff fears. Fear! As if a tariff could conjure copper from nothing. The metal does not care for the anxieties of speculators; it only knows there is never quite enough of it to go round.

And here at home the honest scrapper's #1 Bare Bright fetches about $6.55 the pound, with the market nudging up half a point on the day. A modest gain, but I have counterstamped a hundred thousand cents in my time, and I tell you no metal in the drawer has ever held its dignity like copper. It passed hand to hand through every saloon and eating-house — through my own Fort Wilkins, past the caged bear and the tooth-pulling chair — and it is passing still, only now through switchboards and data-halls and the humming motors of electric carriages.

Why do the vaults sink? Because everything that runs on lightning runs on copper. The wire in your walls, the pipe under your floor, the green-weathered roof that outlives its builders, the bright bottom of the good cook's pan — all of it copper, and all of it hungry. Strip out the insulated wire, weigh your brass and your radiators, for the world wants more of the conductor than the earth is willing to yield this season.

But you know my true religion, and I'll preach it once more. Copper makes good liquor possible. The pot still, the alembic, the moonshiner's coiled worm — every one of them wrought from the red metal for one reason above all. Copper reaches into the rising vapor and seizes the sulfur, the foul volatiles, the mean little compounds that would turn your whiskey to poison and your brandy to bilge. A stainless still is a cold thing that cannot do this office. The monks knew it in their stone cellars; the Appalachian man behind his ridge knows it yet. Centuries of clean spirit owe their sweetness to copper's quiet chemistry.

So let the LME fret over tariffs and empty shelves. To me it is only proof of what I have always said — that copper is the metal the age cannot do without. It lit the lamps, it carries the current, and it still perfumes the dram in your glass. When the vaults run dry and the price runs high, remember: you are holding the people's metal, the conductor, the maker of good liquor. Guard your scrap. Sell it wise.

Yours in the red metal, forever bright — Alchemist G. G. Wilkins
